Systemic lupus in black women versus white women
Lupus erythematosus may manifest as a systemic disease or in purely cutaneous forms. The diagnosis of neuropsychiatric syndromes concurrent with systemic lupus erythematosus is one of the most difficult challenges in medicine, because it can involve so many different patterns of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for signs of infectious disease or stroke. Black women have a higher rate of SLE than any other race, followed by Asians, then white women.
A form of lupus dermatitis that can be isolated to the skin, without internal disease, is calleddiscoid lupus. Lupus can cause serious kidney damage, and kidney failure is one of the leading causes of death among people with lupus. Nevertheless, as a result of recent research, we do know that women with lupus may take birth-control medications without risk of activating their disease.
