All about discoid lupus

As doctors are not sure what causes lupus the reasons why lupus affects the skin are also unclear. Many cases (but not all) are made worse by ultraviolet light, which alters the DNA in the skin, making it more “allergic”. Also, as with other organ involvement in lupus, the disease is often exacerbated by stress.
Two of the patients developed new discoid lupus lesions after showing improvement with Raptiva and had to take other medications; with the addition of these other medicines, however, the patients once again improved, and were able to remain symptom-free with Raptiva and the second medicine. The researchers pointed out that when treated with these medications alone, before Raptiva, neither of these patients had responded.
Most patients find their rash gets worse in sunlight and may be triggered by sunshine. The condition is not infectious and not due to food allergy. It can affect either sex, at any age; young women are the group of patients most often affected, and it is rare in children.
